Brian & Michael talk about Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs
L.S. Lowry, lived in Mottram from 1948 until his death in 1976. Today's post on Hyde Daily Photo features the bronze statue of Lowry seated on a bench located next to the junction of Hyde Road and Stalybridge Road. There is also a close-up picture of the statue on my photoblog Sithenah.
Local duo Brian & Michael created a new audience for Lowry when they recorded their One Hit Wonder Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs. In this video they talk about why Kevin is Brian, and how St. Winifred's Choir came to sing on the record, but not Top of The Pops.

I remember it well.. I might have even bought a copy.. but I'd never admit it :O)
ReplyDeleteThis was a really interesting blast from the past. The choir of course I recall from another ditty of yesteryear, but not the Brian and Michael connection.
ReplyDeleteGerald that is fascinating and a good link from the post I made on Menton. Thanks so much for pointing me in this direction.
ReplyDeleteI once found myself sitting behind Lowry (wearing his green mac.) on the lower deck of the 125 bus that used to run 'express' to Mottram from Manchester. It seems that he spent his time in the Queen's Hotel (demolished in 1971) and thriftily caught the bus back from Chorlton Street to Mottram. Ironic, given that his paintings sell for millions:he didn't seem to get much out of his efforts.
