Before there was a Woolworths

About a hundred years ago there was no Woolworths in Hyde Market Place. Instead there was Brownson's Clothiers.

I don't know when Woolworths moved in but now it seems they may well be on their way out.

woolworths gave up in the ghost in the US years ago. This is a wonderfully grand building .

A great Victorian building. Shame the dome isn't there anymore.

I have always liked Woolwoths distinctive building but I have to admit this one was finer.

So what is taking it's place? Don't tell me a big box WallyMart on the outskirts?

Gerald wonderful pictures. Thanks.

Mum who is now 89 and still as feisty as ever loves looking at the shots. She worked at Woolworths in Hyde in 1936 and again after the war for a short period.

I worked at "cable shoes" right opposite from leaving school at age 14 in 1960 to 1964.

Keep up the good work.
