Hyde Market in the 1950s

This view of Hyde Market in the 1950s is taken from Nancy and Tom's blog Hyde Cheshire.

Hyde Market was the subject of local artist Harry Rutherfords' most famous work "Northern Saturday".

  3. For anyone not familiar with Hyde Market perhaps it should be pointed out that the viewpoints for the 2 pictures are different. The painting is possibly looking from the right upper story window of the building on the right-hand side of the photograph, and the photograph looks like it might have been taken from the upper floor of the building on the left-hand side of the painting. Oddly enough, there's not much difference in the dates - the painting apparently dates from 1948.

  4. Is this what they call boot sale in England?

  5. No Ann - this is a regular market with tradespeople each selling their own range of wares.

A boot sale is where people gather to sell second-hand goods often from the "boots" of their cars (which is where the name comes from) - they take place in farmers' fields or on car parks usually at weekends (and often very early 6am - noon) - householders use them to clear out their clutter - a bit like the amercian yard-sales.

Sorry about having to keep captchas on my blogs but I took them off and got inundated with spam - I appreciate your efforts to comment despite the hurdle.
