This picture from 1910 shows Mottram Old Road at a place known as Cock & Hen Brow.
Old Hyde features non-contemporary material, old photographs, prints &c. of the Greater Manchester/Tameside town Hyde, in the county of Cheshire. It is a companion blog to Hyde Daily Photo.
Obviously a Sunday. Everyone seems to be in their "Sunday best" and taking a leisurely stroll in the direction of Mottram.
ReplyDeleteThe only building remaining in the distance is the farm directly on the corner and the house in the foreground has recently been renovated and extended.
Great view of a bygone age Gerald... a Sunday stroll with your lady on you arm... courting now seems to be something quite different.. ha!... I've never heard it called Cock and Hen... live and learn
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of it either. I'll have to consult my Dad!
ReplyDeletePlease correct me if anyone knows better, but I have information the the Gee family owned or operated a pub and a sweet shop in Romiley. The proprietor of the sweet shop was Samuel Gee and I think the pub may have been the Forresters Arms. I would love any corrections or photos, I can verify my information but it would take a while to find it.Several members of the Gee family died at the Hyde Colliery Explosion and great grandfather Henry Gee owned a paper mill while he was living on PoleAcre Lane. I would love to see what PoleAcre Lane and farm was like during the 1800's.
