Automasters from Manchester Road Bridge

I'm not sure of the date of this picture. It is from before renovations which took place in the 1980s.

Compare this view with a recent view from roughly the same location

  1. I can remember some of that view Gerald... but only just. I was at Greenfield Street school at the beginning of the 1970s so I must have been here many times then. Across the road from here was some waste ground, at the side of the canal bridge near to that sign post that simply says.. 'Over Yonder' were two Steam Traction Engines... I would love to know what became of them. I know Ashton Brothers Mills had there own but I do not know who's they were.

  2. This looks so Charles Dickens and very different from the other shot.

  4. Look at the older building close to Manchester Road. They knocked that down in 1963 or 1964. They knocked the wall down so it fell onto the cellar ceiling. I was just 2 seconds away from walking into that store room when the whole lot caved in. I was 2 seconds from certain death. So much for health and safety in those days. Did the manager (Joe?) care? Nope. I am 62 now and still alive. I remember some of the names. The two Smart Brothers. Happy Harry. Araldite (Harold Wright). WC (Wally Carr). Charly Meccanovitch (Milenovic). The singing guy Brimble, but I can't remember his first name. He was a welder. Reg something. Bert something (I think)

Before they demolished the old building they found a lot of old money stashed behind the safe in there.

  5. I remember the steam traction engines in the yard opposite Automasters (where I worked in 1963/4). I worked at Ashton Brothers later but didn't see any traction engines there. I worked at Middle Mill doing labouring and cheese winding (nothing to do with cheese).

    Cheers,

    Bob
