I haven't been able to work out exactly from which direction this was taken.

I have a feeling this might have been taken fron the White Lion.. but thats a guess... this really is a fantastic picture of 'Old Hyde' Gerald..
ReplyDeleteyour right it was taken from the white lion,lived in hyde all my 7o years.when i was a little girl it looked very much the same as the photo,lovely picture.Beryl Saxon.
DeleteIf it is morning to early afternoon, you are looking east, according to the sunlight on the stall roofs. Hope that is helpful. I was really drawn to this wonderful image.

That sounds right Tom - that would mean that the street at the end there is Reynold St. All those buildings on the left have disappeared and are where the Clarendon Shopping Centre now stands.

ReplyDeleteWell Gerald... there is a post or two about the Norfolk Arms, My mother lived on Norfolk Street before her family moved to Hamnett Street at the side of Woolies
ReplyDeleteI have a picture looking in the same direction, but the old market hall is on there. When was that built then? I remember it as a child so it mustn't have been demolished until the shopping centre was built, but I can't remember when that was either.

The Town Hall is to the right of the market.
ReplyDeleteJust for posterity - the pawn shop later owned by Mr Meal is in the top centre before the Norfolk Arms. The boat swings were later moved to the left of where they are shown - Barlow Family?
